COVID-19 - Thermal and IR Tools To Keep You Safe
How can we add an extra layer of protection to help keep your staff and customers safe during these unprecedented times? For those organizations who are fortunate enough to still be servicing their customers, some of their hard-working team members still come to work to keep things moving.
Most of these companies have already implemented the recommended guidelines put forth by their respective governments and added their own policies to help keep people separated as much as possible. When looking at businesses that interact daily with the general public, trying to figure out the best methods to protect all is daunting.
Challenges we face with COVID-19
Let’s look at both sides: Even with all these precautions in place, there is still a tremendous amount of fear around job security. Let’s face it, people need to work and support their families. This leaves companies with the unenviable task of how to continue to ensure their work force stays healthy.
How do we make sure our employees are not coming to work sick? Symptoms can be dismissed as just a cold or nothing overly serious. The flip side is also true. The public still needs to go out and buy consumable goods for their daily lives. Are organizations doing all they can to ensure they are monitoring for the health and safety of their employees?
Solutions we recommend
So, how do we do this? There are numerous ways organizations are tackling this. One such way centers around adding Thermal cameras or Infrared (IR) Thermometers to existing security and screening measures. These tools specifically look for elevated body temperatures which could indicate a fever - one of the key symptoms of COVID-19.
Camera solutions can be set up as a temporary measure or as part of your existing infrastructure depending on the type of deployment you are looking for. A simple tripod mount connected to a laptop would allow for group scanning of up to 30 people at a time. This could be discreetly monitored through your existing VMS software and alerts be given to a central location that can then decide upon the appropriate course of action.
A less expensive option would be a handheld thermometer that can be either mounted or used in conjunction with a guard for smaller one on one entry points such as single file lines. Guards or supervisors can also make use of either the handheld or an Infrared Thermometer to take employees’ temperatures at the beginning of each shift before they enter the place of work.
Infrared and IR technology has been around for quite a while. It is important to note that not all manufacturers meet the federal and provincial standards. Unfortunately, there isn’t a camera or thermometer on the market that can detect the presence of COVID-19, but they can be used as another valuable tool in the fight to help keep you employees and customers safe.
