What are the Pros and Cons of Wireless Alarm Systems?

Today’s wireless technology has come a long way, and many intrusion alarm systems are now available almost entirely wirelessly. Here we look at some of the pros and cons of wireless versus traditionally wired alarm systems:

 Wireless

 Pros:

-          No need to run cabling to field devices (door contact sensors, motion detectors etc.) can sharply reduce the overall cost of the project.

-          In existing buildings with entirely drywalled ceilings, wireless systems are significantly easier to install.

-          Devices can be placed almost anywhere and are easily and quickly mounted without the need to terminate wires.

-          Devices can be relocated easily if necessary.

Cons:

-          Field devices take batteries, which means a higher cost of maintenance in the long term.

-          Devices communicate back to the main panel via RF signal, so interference can occur which would prevent the device from working properly. Interference can be caused by metal studs or siding, vegetation, distance or even (very rarely) intentional jamming.

-          Individual devices are typically more expensive than their traditional wired counterparts.

-          As most devices are proprietary, there could be limited potential for upgrade or integration in the future.

What are the Pros and Cons of Wired Alarm Systems?

Pros:

-          Once a wire is connected to the device, it is there for good and could function with little to no maintenance for years to come.

-          Individual hardware devices are generally less expensive.

-          No risk of interference or signal disruption as there is a physical connection between the device and the panel.

-          Oftentimes, future upgrades of the main panel can be done while re-using the existing field devices and cabling.

Cons:

-          Running cable can be inconvenient and expensive.

-          In larger systems, purchasing additional expansion modules and power supply modules to connect and power all the devices can run up the initial setup cost.

-          Numerous wires to terminate into the devices and panel increases the installation time.

For many businesses, wireless systems are an easier and more affordable way to secure their premises. For other businesses (businesses with larger facilities or higher value assets), nothing beats the reliability of a traditionally cabled alarm system.
